Once you get through the campaign there are options that open up for an EX playthrough. The campaign took me roughly 20 hours to complete on normal difficulty.
There are 17 large, but linear levels with a good amount of secrets and easter eggs to discover. They’re designed to accommodate battles against dozens of enemies, with more big, open areas than you see in most shooters nowadays, and are littered with secrets that, in true old-school fashion, encouraged me to explore every nook and cranny instead of rushing straight through. Each of the 17 levels has a pleasing amount of visual varietyĮach of the 17 levels has a pleasing amount of visual variety, ranging from Japanese temples lined with blossoming cherry trees to sewers, fiery demon dimensions, snowy fortresses, stormy ports, and more. The AI isn’t anything special, but one thing that I found interesting is the Enrage mechanic, where the demons became ‘pissed off’. Most of the enemies you’ll be fighting against are demons, which comes in decent variety: flying ones, shielded ones, invisible ones, etc you name it, they have it. It’s a great compromise that preserves the need to constantly move (rather than hiding behind something to heal) but also removes the need to scour the environment for pickups or load a save because you’ve consumed everything. The health system smartly splits the difference between regenerating health and pickups, allowing you to manually regenerate about two thirds of Wang’s health bar by using one of his powers, but still requiring you to pick up health kits to max it out. It works, but it makes it a little tough to use them quickly, especially when you’re trying to activate the healing power while dodging enemies. I have mixed feelings about the controls, which use a double-tap of a directional button followed by a click to activate a power. Stringing a few of those together feels pretty badass, and that’s reinforced by a score system that pops up after each fight (however, it’s never clearly explained how you’re supposed to max it out). Swordplay starts out as simple melee slashing, but becomes much more interesting when you unlock Wang’s advanced moves, like a powerful lunge and a whirling attack that slices enemies on all sides in a fantastic slightly slow-mo spin. Moving on, how does the enemy fare in SW? Quite good, actually. They range from plenty of categories, from boosting damage dealt to longer sprint meter to improved health bar. The last one is the skills system, which is more akin to a traditional skill tree. All of them are extremely important to survive through the game learning how and when to use them could make a difference in a large-scale battle. Early on in the game, you’ll gain access to your ‘demonic powers’, granting you extraordinary supernatural powers such as healing factor and shield protection. The only issue that I have is the absence of a weapon wheel because enemies will be Zerg Rushing at you non-stop, having to press the num keys from 0-9 became an annoyance quickly. For example, the SMG can be upgraded to be dual-wielded, the crossbow can shoot proximity mines and the shotgun can fire all of its pellets at once. What elevates this typical weapons selection, however, is the ability to give them a secondary function. You’ve seen these weapon types here: pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, crossbows, rocket launchers, etc the usual stuff. It’s the first weapon you acquired and also one of the best ones: as your progress through the story, new upgrades will be automatically applied for the sword, making it more powerful. On one hand, you got the iconic sword the Nobitsura Kage itself. As Lo Wang, you’ll be slicing and blasting foes using your trusty weapons. Just like the original, SW is played from a first-person perspective. Upgradeable Arsenal – Utilize every gun in your formidable armory. Elegant Swordplay – Unsheathe your legendary katana to slice enemies apart with precisely targeted swings or unleash fluid combos and special attacks to cut down hordes of enemies with one swift pass through the enraged hordes. Shadow Warrior Reborn – A bold new vision of Shadow Warrior elegantly blends classic first-person shooter gameplay with thrilling action, inventive combat, and a contemporary retelling of the hilarious legend of Lo Wang. Now the reluctant hero must become legend through a masterful combination of gun, blade, magic and wit to uncover the truth behind the demonic invasion and banish evil back into the darkness.
